As lead engineer, American prepared plans for the demolition and replacement of four existing rest area facilities. Three of the rest areas were constructed in the same locations as the existing facilities. The Okaloosa eastbound rest area was relocated approximately three miles to the east of the exisiting location, which placed it in close proximity to the Okaloosa westbound facility. The project replaced the existing facilities with new standardized facilities, which will have a 20-year life and be expandable to meet public need for up to 40 years. The standardization allows visitors easy recognition of Florida rest areas. The rest areas were designed and constructed to be aesthetically pleasing and functional with low long-term maintenance requirements.
