Urban Street Symposium Honors Chlewicki with Best Paper Award

The work of Gil Chlewicki, PE, was recognized with the Best Paper award at the 5th Urban Street Symposium in North Carolina. The paper, titled Improving Pedestrian Operations at Innovative Geometric Designs,  focuses on pedestrian issues related to innovative geometric designs with the aim to improve the design for pedestrians in these designs with geometric and/or traffic operational improvements. Innovative geometric designs such as diverging diamond interchanges , superstreets, continuous flow intersections, median u-turn intersections, continuous-T intersections, quadrant roadway, and jughandles have proven to improve traffic operations and reduce crashes for a significantly lower cost than more traditional intersection designs in many applications.

Transportation Research Board (TRB) cosponsored the 5th Urban Street Symposium in May 21-24, 2017, in Raleigh, North Carolina. The symposium explored improvements in suburban and urban street design practices, fostered discussions on alternative street design practices, examined alternative street designs, and facilitated the transfer of urban street research findings to state agencies and to local governments.
